I re-imagined the built form of Tacoma’s Hilltop neighborhood through a series of plan and section drawings that communicate how scale and lighting would impact the future of the neighborhood.
My study area is located at 900 M.L.K. Jr Way, Tacoma, WA, which includes the block surrounding People’s Park on the corner of MLK Jr Way and S 9th Street. A brief history of the Hilltop neighborhood. Hilltop was one of the first neighborhoods to develop in Tacoma due to its proximity to abundant economic opportunities on the waterfront. The cable car was installed in the late 19th century which opened the neighborhood up to the city making it more accessible and fueled development up to the Great Depression. The standard lot width was originally 25 feet, packing families into long narrow lots was thought to be spatially utilitarian. Now these lots have largely been consolidated to make quadplex apartment style multifamily housing, and many of these blocks were cleared with the promise of new commercial opportunities but lay vacant to this day.
