Rainier Ave S in Seattle’s Mt. Baker neighborhood is one of the deadliest principal arterials in the city. With the addition of new high speed rail, accessibility and pedestrian safety is more important than ever. This design intervention uses established traffic calming measures to ensure pedestrian safety and equity in a historically under resourced neighborhood.

On Hanford street looking North
The design intervention prioritizes the pedestrian experience by providing a mid-block triggered crossing preventing left turn movements from south bound traffic. The pedestrian refuge will be above grade, creating a sense of safety from the users and producing a traffic calming effect for driver.
